There is a patina of friendly competition that spans the north Atlantic, and misunderstandings can be humorous and worthy of retelling many times over a whiskey. As an American replied when asked, by an Englishman, why he pronounced words in such a curious way, he said perhaps we went to different schools.

Well, different schools it may be, but language is changing on both sides of the Atlantic, and anyone with a website that wants to take advantage of two of the biggest markets in online business, should know exactly when search engines find it important.

It was Noah Webster who changed many words to their present form. Slowly he Americanised spelling. He chose s over c in words like defence; he changed the re to er in words like centre; changed traveller to traveler, and although at first he kept the u in words like colour or favour, he changed them in later editions of his dictionary.

So what are the ramifications of for SEO.

Let us take as an example www.opexhosting.com.

OPEX are a provider of call centre solutions in the UK, so on the face of it would use key phrases like call centre, or contact centre, with the 'er' ending as they are spelled in the UK.

It is not, however, quite that simple.

A tool that says it provides results depending on what market you are aiming at is the yahoo search marketing keyword tool (Overture).

If I type in call centre in the section designed to exhibit UK results, I find that the UK spelling does not come up at all in the singular spelling of the word. It seems that the UK spelling of call centre has dropped from the radar entirely.

Are we getting confused about spelling in old blighty? It wouldnt be the first time. We might drive 60 miles, but then run 100 metres, a hot day can be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but it is cold at sub zero degrees centigrade, cars are filled in Litres, but a car that does 50 miles to the gallon is doing its bit to save the planet.

Not giving in I went back to my trusty keyword tool and tried again with catalogue, and it came back with results spelled catalog.

Smelling a rat I popped across to the overture bid tool, and found that the bids were exactly the same for the US and UK spellings. It seems that yahoo search marketing (or what used to be overture) bundles US and UK spellings in the same pot. I was not going to get any meaningful data here.

I then took a look at the keyword suggestion tool at wordtracker.com which finally gave me some recognisable results. Using its own database of searched for terms, It told me that 570 people per day were searching for call center (US) and 92 were looking for a call centre (UK). So UK English is, most probably, still being used in England.

But how do search engines react to the different spellings?

Google does take notice. If we type Contact centre into Google we get different results to contact center, as we do for color and colour, so Google does not just bundle the results into one big lump.

How do the results differ? Well for a start in the US version of Google, which seems to get from 70% to 80% of Google traffic even in the UK, call center gets 947,000,000 results, and call centre gets 157,000,000, which is a very similar ratio to the wordtracker results at around 6 to 1 US to UK spellings.

If we look at google.co.uk results are, of course, biased more towards UK results, including spelling. But with many UK websites reporting only 25% to 30% of Google traffic coming from the UK version its search engine, we find ourselves in a quandary.

If we do a search on call centres, in Googles US version, using the English spelling, the number two slot is a website that does not have the UK version of the word in it.

Put simply.

If you are an American or an English site, with any keywords that require different spellings for each side of the pond, and you want to either capture the other market or even, in the case of UK sites, be sure of covering all angles in your own market, best optimise for both.

So how do we do that.

One way is to maintain a .co.uk (or .com.au etc) and a .com site. This risks tripping over Googles duplicate content algorithm made popular in the jagger update, and marketing efforts, like link building, would have to be for two separate sites.

Another possibility is to use both UK and US spelling in the same site content. But how does this look in a site that is trying to tell its visitors that they are an eloquent business proposition. Well, it is possible to put alternative spellings into things like meta tags and image alts. Its perfectly legal, although Noah Webster might turn in his grave.

When I first started learning Internet marketing, I subscribed to as many newsletters as I could, read everything I could find on the topic and marveled at the riches that others were achieving so quickly.

In an effort to be successful like they were, I bought almost every eBook they promoted, bought nearly every product they claimed was used to build their online empire and joined their affiliate programs so that I too could promote their wonderful products.

Who are they? People I never met in person, rarely ever spoke with, yet was drawn into the sales letters because those letters were written to be so believable. They are people with names that many now know as Internet marketing gurus or geniuses.

Maybe some of them were living a good life with a fat bank account when I first started following their teaching. The others were, or had, good writers that made them appear to be on top of the market. Still others were nobody until a big name found out about the new product or course that they worked out a joint venture with and promoted it to their huge mailing lists to the point that the nobody became somebody almost overnight.

What raised my suspicions though was when suddenly a new breed came forward claiming that they were the ghost writers that made the others popular, successful and rich. For some reason those writers decided that they no longer wanted to be the unknown. They wanted the spotlight. The strange thing about that is their marketing letters were nearly identical to the ones I had been reading all along, sent by the so-called gurus.

So who really are the brains behind all of this? Did the ghost writers hire ghost writers to write their sales letters? Or are they really writing their own? If they are writing their own, then they are still working harder than the people who they wrote for, because now they have added another project to their list. Oh and the first 1/3 of the eBook you just bought from them probably contains little more than bragging about what they have done, who they helped get rich and why now, after years of silence, you should suddenly believe everything they say.

What I think is really hard to believe, are the photos of checks and account balances with certain identifying items blanked out, supposedly to avoid breaking any rules by the payment processors. Come on now, I have seen a lot online and the one thing I know that can be used in practically any situation is an anonymous photo.

But maybe that is just me, because apparently it works well enough to bring in sales. People want to buy from those who appear to be successful, even if the resulting eBook is so full of fluff that it tells the reader basically noting about how the riches are made. If you want to know that, then look at the emails and sales letters. They tell basically the same story over and over, with just the characters and situations changing. They used to be poor, some nearly homeless, until they created this life-changing product.

I looked at some of the sites that were claimed to make a lot of sales. They were 40+ pages long. Give me a break! Do YOU ever read that much before buying anything? Most often you will read the first few paragraphs to see what the product is about, then skip down towards the bottom to see the price tag and bonuses, that usually cost the seller little to nothing anyway. Many times those bonuses are teasers like trial products that get you to buy them too. One of the so-called gurus shocked me when he promoted a furnace sale. Yes, you read that right. He needed a new furnace but did not have enough to pay for it. I thought being a successful marketer meant you COULD pay for things you wanted or needed. I spoke with him personally, had him as a guest speaker on one of my live training calls and respect what he does. I never expected that sale though.

The remaining question in all of this is: Who can you truly believe?

To learn the answer, do some basic research. Search Google, Yahoo! or your favorite search engine. If that person is truly popular, they should have several hundred or thousands of sites linking to them. Go to affiliate discussion forums and search for the product or author name. Read what others are saying about the author.

In the end, when you have followed the teachings of someone you can connect with and feel comfortable learning from, stay with them and tell others about them. That way, when that person tells you of a product or service that could truly help you, then you will feel much more comfortable taking their advice and buying that product.

You won't find many article marketing secrets being given away online, because very few people properly understand the power of this internet marketing tool. It is more than simply a way of getting links back to your website, but a very powerful tool that if used properly can increase your sales to another level.

If you are provided with 'secrets' then they are well known by almost everybody. I will admit that even the 'secrets' I am about to divulge are not secrets at all, but well known article marketing techniques. However, what I will also say is that the three provided here are neither appreciated nor used by all of those that profess to be marketing 'gurus'.

I know that because I have purchased many of their books and they don't suggest what I suggest: I know my systems work and can prove it through my website listings. However I must stop because I am becoming dangerously close to advertising, but I have done so as to indicate about the maximum you can do on article directories to advertise yourself: and that is your free tip. Do not advertise in your articles if they are intended for submission. Leave that for your 'author's resource box'.

The most common purpose for people writing articles and offering them to directories for publication is to get those all-important back links from the directories. However, just stand back a bit and think why the directories are in existence. It is not for your benefit. It is not to provide you with a free means of improving your Google PageRank, but they exist to make money. And why not? Otherwise there would be no point in anybody offering an article directory to all of these online writers.

You don't pay to have your articles published on the directories, so what is their purpose? How do these people make money? Two ways in fact: the first is by means of AdSense. If you do a search for an article on a specific topic, you will certainly find one because articles have been written on every topic on the planet. On the same page you will find AdSense ads. The reason for this is obvious and also psychological.

It is because most articles are not worth reading, and visitors generally have a quick look at them before leaving the directory site to seek proper information on their topic or niche. That is when they are liable to click on the AdSense ads and make money for the directory owner. That is added to the second way they make money which is from payment for speeding up the listing of the articles. You've seen the thing: get listed in several weeks or pay a few dollars for an instant listing. Like most other serious marketers, I pay.

Whichever means they use, article directories realize that it is to their advantage to get high search engine listings for as many articles as possible. They then have their sites visited by as many people as possible, and also have writers use them. That provides them with more visitors to click the AdSense ads and also as an inducement to other budding authors who might pay for listings. I don't pay for a listing in a site that never displays my articles on Google.

Here are three secrets or tips, that you can use in your own article marketing campaigns:

Secret #1 is that if you write the article on a topic related to the content of a page on your website, then the directory (and by that I mean the owner, but let's call it 'the directory' for simplicity) will do all the SEO work and get your article listed so as to get as many visitors as possible. That earns them money. What that means to you is that you get free SEO done on your article.

Why do you think that your articles have to be of a minimum length and of a certain standard? To be listed by search engines, especially Google, that's why. You can use this information to your advantage, but your articles must be at least 500 words. Your resource URL must be one related to the article, and if you make it your blog, that is even better. Place links on your blog to all your other relevant online ventures.

Secret #2 is not really a secret as a submission technique. When you have finished writing your article save it and submit it as a text file. Most people write using Microsoft word, or some other word processing software that uses their own formating code embedded in the article. You don't see it, but the search engines do and it could harm the listing of the directory web page containing your article.

Secret #3 is that many sites offer two or three links in the author's resource. That allows you not only to present links to two or three pages on your website, but also that these links need not all be from the same site. You could provide a link to a page relating to the article (as you always should), one to one of your other websites or Squidoo lens, and a third to your blog URL. Never ignore these possibilities. Open up your mind.

There are several more article marketing secrets that I could give you but that would render this article far too long. You might also require some elementary HTML instruction to provide you with a working knowledge: HTML, or hyptertext mark-up language, is not really a computer language but a means of linking text to files, and it can also be used to format text, graphics and tables on websites and any other medium that can read HTML and transfer it to the intended visual formating.

However, the above secrets are sufficient allow you to use them as SEO techniques that will improve your chances of a high search engine listing. Learn them and use them, and even if you think that they seem fairly elementary I bet my bottom dollar that nobody is using all of them in their article marketing campaigns, because most people are still thinking in mono as far as article marketing is concerned and have to reach the analogue stereo age let alone digital.

Get modern and look farther than you can see, or the internet kids will soon gobble you up for breakfast! Yesterday's techniques are today's tomorrow.

The first step in writing a high-performance article is writing a headline that captures the readers attention. Use words in your title that create curiosity and interest. I often use an online thesaurus for generating word ideas.

The next step is to keep your article's content consistent with title of article. One mistake article writer's often make is writing content that doesn't match the article title. If title of the article is about dog training tips and you then spend the article discussing the joys of having a dog, there is a good chance you will lose your reader before they finish the article.   1. Hire ghostwriters to help with your articles and blog posts. You can look for ghosts in your subject area by searching forums and asking for recommendations. And you can head to online bid sites like Elance.com, post content creation projects to gather bids and then choose some and give the writers a try.

  • Keep a content log going so you know when to update your site. You want to keep fresh content on there; don't let the site go stale.
